What You Need to Know
Your visa allows you to stay in Japan for a certain time. The date is on your residence card. You cannot stay in Japan after this date without renewing your visa.
If your visa expires, you must renew it to stay in Japan legally. Without a valid visa, you cannot work, study, or live in Japan. You will have serious legal problems.
You can apply for visa renewal 3 months before your visa expires. You must submit your application before your visa expires.
- 3 months before: You can start your application
- 1 month before: Submit your application
- Expiration date: After this date, you are not allowed to work, including part-time jobs
Required Documents
You need several documents for your visa renewal. Here are the three most important forms and other documents you need.

Your school must provide this document. It proves your school is approved by the immigration office. Class I schools have excellent management. Class II schools are also approved but have different management standards.
You also need these documents with the three main forms:
- Photo (4cm × 3cm, 1 photo)
- School enrollment certificate
- Grade report or attendance record
- Tax Payment Certificate (Nozei Shomeisho)
- Bank statement copy (if needed)
Visa Renewal Timeline
Start Planning
You can start your visa renewal application 3 months before your current visa expires. Begin gathering documents now.
Submit Application
Submit your application at least 1 month before your visa expires. This gives time to fix any problems with your documents.
Wait for Results
Usually, you will receive the results within 2–3 weeks. However, in some cases, it may take 1–3 months or longer. Please make sure to obtain approval before your current visa expires. Do not panic.
How to Apply
Prepare Documents
Download all forms. Get certificates from your school. Collect all papers you need.
Fill Out Forms
Write or type your information carefully. Check everything for mistakes. When signing, write your name in capital letters exactly as it appears on your residence card.
Submit to Immigration
Go to your local immigration office and submit your documents in person. Keep a copy for your records..
Wait for Results
Usually 2-3 weeks. You will receive a postcard (hagaki) in your mailbox, so please check it regularly. Once you receive it, visit the immigration office.

What if I make a mistake on the form?
For minor mistakes, draw a double line through the incorrect text and write the correct information above it. For major mistakes, complete a new form. Do not use correction fluid.
Where do I submit my documents?
Go to the immigration office in your area. Check the immigration office website for your local office.
What if my visa renewal is denied?
Ask why your application was denied. Correct the issues and apply again. Your school can assist you with this, or you may visit the immigration office and consult the staff in charge.
Can I leave Japan while waiting for my visa renewal?
In general, it is not recommended to leave Japan while your visa renewal application is under review. However, travel is possible if necessary. Before leaving, you must inform the immigration office staff and complete the required form, providing your travel dates, return date, contact number, and address while abroad. If needed, immigration may contact you during the process.
I personally traveled to Nepal during my renewal process and returned without any issues after completing the required procedure.
